拒絕利用神通傳教的佛陀

有一次,佛陀來到了摩竭陀國境內遊化,住在那爛陀城郊的芒果(菴羅)園中。

這一天,來了一位名叫「堅固」的在家居士拜訪佛陀。堅固居士向佛陀頂禮後,對佛陀建議說,那爛陀是一個繁榮富裕的城市,人口眾多,世尊如果能要一位比丘,在大眾前展現神通,那麼,我們那爛陀城的人,一定會更加地敬信世尊。

佛陀回答說,我從來不會教比丘們對任何在家人展現神通,我只教導他們遠離喧囂,寧靜地思惟佛法,如果有所成就,自己知道就好,如果有了過失,則當自我舉發,懺悔改過。

然而,這位名叫堅固的在家居士,還是再三地請求佛陀要比丘們對那爛陀城民眾展現神通,以爭取更多人敬信佛陀,方便佛陀與佛弟子們在這人口眾多的城市弘揚佛法,利益更多的人。

佛陀再三地拒絕了,並且說明為何不願意以神通來宣揚佛法的理由。佛陀說,我可以以三種自己的親身體證來作教化:一是神足神通,二是他心神通,三是教誡神通。什麼是神足神通?神足神通就是能變化出許多化身、隱身、穿牆、入地、水上行走、空中飛行、身出煙火、直達梵天等等的超能力。然而,如果有一位信仰佛教,歸依三寶的人,告訴另一位非佛教徒朋友說:「太稀有神奇了!我見過佛弟子比丘能現無量神足神通,他可以直達梵天,真是大神力、大威德啊!」那位非佛教徒朋友可能會這樣回答:「是啊,確實有這樣的明咒,可以讓人有神通力。那位比丘就是依著這樣的明咒而現無量神通的。」像這樣,不但沒有真正達到宣揚佛法的目的,是不是反而成為一種毀謗呢!所以,佛陀說,依他的觀察,深知展現神通變化的缺失,所以排除這樣子的展現神通。

什麼是他心神通?那是不必別人告知,就能知道他人心中在想什麼的超常能力。同樣地,如果有一位信仰佛教,歸依三寶的人,告訴另一位非佛教徒朋友說:「太希有神奇了!我見過比丘能現他心神通,知道別人心中在想什麼,真是大神力、大威德啊!」而那位非佛教徒朋友可能會這樣回答:「是啊,確實有這樣的咒可以讓人有他心神通。那位比丘就是依著這樣的咒,而知道別人心中在想什麼的。」這樣,是不是沒有達到目的,反而成為一種毀謗呢!所以,佛陀說,依他的觀察,深知他心神通的缺失,所以也排除這樣子的展現他心神通。

所以,佛陀說:「我以這樣的緣故,所以不教比丘們現神通變化,只教他們寧靜地去思惟佛法;舉發自己的過失,而不現自己的成就,這就是我比丘弟子們的神足神通與他心神通。」

什麼是教誡神通?例如對比丘作這樣的教誡:「你應該這樣思惟,不要那樣思惟;意念應該這樣,不要那樣;應該捨離這些,而到那邊安住。」像這樣為他說法,內容純正,義理清淨,可以令人修行圓滿。這樣的教誡、說法,讓在家長者、居士們聽了以後,真正的對佛法有正確的認識,才能引發他們對佛法的信心,進而有意願出家修學,成就三明解脫,這就是我比丘們的教誡神通。

The Buddha Refuses to Utilize Supernatural Power to Spread the Dharma

Once upon a time, the Buddha arrived at Magadha, one of the countries in ancient India for a visit. He resided in a mango orchard, located in suburb of Nalanda.

In this particular day, Mukta-sara, a householder came to visit the Buddha. After prostrating to the Buddha, Mukta-sara said that Nalanda was a rich a prosperous city, and suggested that if the Buddha could dispatch a monk to display supernatural power in the public, then, the Nalandans would be respecting and believe in the Buddha even more.

The Buddha answered: “I have never taught the monks to display supernatural power to the householders. I only teach them stay away form the noisy places and to quietly contemplate the Dharma. If they have achieved something, they should keep to themselves. If committed mistakes, they should confess and be penitent.

However, the householder Mukta-sara repeatedly requested the Buddha to allow the monks to display supernatural power to residents of Nalanda, to win over more people to respect and believe in the Buddha, to facilitate the Buddha and his followers to spread the Dharma and benefit more people in this populated city.

The Buddha again repeatedly refused, and provided reasons why he would not utilize supernatural power to spread the Dharma. The Buddha said: “I can use three of my own verified methodologies to teach: The first is Meditative Concentration Supernatural Power, the second is Telepathy Supernatural Power and the third is Teaching Commandment Supernatural Power. What is Meditative Concentration Supernatural Power? It is the supernatural abilities of multiple manifestation of oneself; perform invisibility; passing through a wall, entering the ground; walk on water; fly in the sky; emitting smoke and fire from the body and directing reaching the Brahman Heaven etc. However, if one Buddhist who took refuge in the Triple Gem and told a non-Buddhist friend: “It is rare and marvelous, I have seen Buddhist monks who are able to display endless spiritual supernatural power, he can reach the Brahman Heaven directly, it is indeed great spiritual power and great prestigious virtue.” The non-Buddhist friend could have answered: “Yes, there are indeed existence of such excellent mantra, the monk was relied upon such excellent mantra to display the endless supernatural power.” As such, it not only failed to attain truly the goal of spreading the Dharma, but also became slandering the Dharma instead? Therefore, the Buddha said that according to his observations, he was fully aware of the shortcomings of displaying supernatural power, therefore rejected the idea of displaying supernatural power in such way.

What is Telepathy Supernatural Power? It is the spiritual power of perceiving others thinking without being told. Similarly, if one Buddhist who took refuge in the Triple Gem and told a non-Buddhist friend: “It is rare and marvelous, I have seen Buddhist monks who are able to perceive others thinking, it is indeed great spiritual power and great prestigious virtue.” The non-Buddhist friend could have answered: “Yes, there are indeed existence of such mantra, the monk was relied upon such mantra to perceive what others are thinking.” As such, it not only failed to attain truly the goal of spreading the Dharma, but also became slandering the Dharma instead? Therefore, the Buddha said that according to his observations, he was fully aware of the shortcomings of Telepathy Supernatural Power, hence rejected the idea of displaying telepathy in such way.

Therefore, the Buddha said: “For these reasons, I do not teach the monks display the supernatural power, only teach them to quietly contemplate the Dharma, confessing their own mistakes and not bragging their achievements. These are my monastic disciples’ Spiritual Concentration Supernatural Power and Telepathy Supernatural Power.”

What is the supernatural power of Teaching Commandment? Examples are teaching such commandments as “You should be thinking this way, not that way; perceiving this way and not the other way; should discard this here and dwell peacefully over there.” Teaching the Dharma from the approach of its pure content and peace and quiet argumentation so that people can practice satisfactorily. Such commandment teaching and Dharma disseminating would allow the elders at home and householders, after listening, truly and correctly recognize the Dharma; enable them to develop faiths in the Dharma, willing to leave home to study, and achieve the Three Understand Liberation. (Understand one’s or others previous lives; understand one’s or others future lives; and understand how to utilize wisdom to cut off vexation) This is my pedagogy of Teaching Commandment Supernatural Power for the monks.

一、本則故事取材自《長阿含第二四堅固經》、《長部第一一堅固經》。另,有關世尊的「三種教化」,參考《雜阿含第一九七經》?《長阿含第一大本經經》、《中阿含第一四三傷歌邏經》、《增支部第三集第六十經》。

二、神通,是修學禪定成就時伴隨而來的超常能力,最讓一般常人感到神奇而具吸引力了。然而,佛陀所要教導我們的,是煩惱的徹底止息、生命的解脫,這些都不是神通所能成辦的。如果依據《雜阿含第一二一二經》、《中阿含第一二一經》、《相應部第八相應第七經》的記載,一群五百位比丘解脫者中,是慧解脫阿羅漢的數目高達三百二十位,占百分之六十四之多。而慧解脫阿羅漢,依《雜阿含第三四七經》說,是沒有初禪以上禪定力的解脫者,而《相應部第一二相應第七0經》則直接說,是沒有神通能力的解脫者,可見一班。

三、利用神通或神蹟來拓展佛教,似乎是一個好點子,即使在今天,恐怕都還不免有人會這樣認為。其實,二千多年前佛陀就曾經明確地拒絕了,當時的婆羅門教非因計因,流行咒術咒語,講求神通神蹟,如果佛教的開拓,也隨一般人投其所好,搶搭這樣的列車,因地不正,如何能引入純正的佛法呢?佛陀評估這樣的方法是弊多於利,所以不願意以神通來宣揚佛法,也不要出家比丘們以神通來吸引人們。今天我們所在的環境,一般人仍然對神通與神蹟趨之若鶩,基本上與佛陀時代相差不多,想要以展現神通來開拓佛教的版圖,恐怕仍然不得其要,反而流失了純正佛法的清晰度,終究會得不償失的。

四、教誡神通,與神足神通、他心神通是不一樣的,這並不是一般人所認為的神通。依佛陀的解說,這是經由諄諄教誨,引導有次第地修學佛法,然後通達煩惱的徹底止息與解脫的,本來與神通無關,但就從能引導一位凡夫成為解脫聖者的巨大變化來說,也算是另類的神通,這或許是將教誡也稱為神通的原因吧!

1. The story was derived from Dirghagama 24th Mukta-sara Sutra; Brahmajala 11th Mukta-sara Sutra. Also, regarding Buddha’s “Three Teachings” references were Samyuktagama 179th Sutra; Dirghagama First Sutra; Madhyamagama 143th Sutra; Anguttaka-nikaya Volume III, 60th Sutra.

2. Spiritual power is the supernatural abilities accompany with the attainment of Meditative Concentration Practice. It has the elements of mystery and wonders which became most attractive to the ordinary people. However, what the Buddha wants to teach us are the total cessation of vexation, liberated from life and death. These could not be achieved by spiritual power. As stated in texts of Samyuktagama 1212th Sutra; Madhyamagama 121th Sutra; Samyukta-nikaya Samyukta 7th Sutra, as high as 320 among the 500 liberated monks (64%), achieved the Arhatship through Wisdom Liberation. According to Samyuktagama 347th Sutra, those Arahans who achieved Wisdom Liberation had yet to reach the state of First Concentration in Meditative Concentration Practice. Moreover, Anguttaka-nikaya 12th Anguttaka, 70th Sutra, stated directly that those Arahans who achieved Wisdom Liberation were liberated without possessing of spiritual power.

3. To this date, some people still believe that utilization of supernatural power or spiritual power to expand Buddhism appears to be a good ploy. In fact, the Buddha had clearly rejected such suggestions. At that time Brahman followers accounting non-cause as cause, took mantra and incantation acts as fashion, emphasizing spiritual power and miracle. If the way of expanding Buddhism is cater to the general public, rush to ride the bandwagon, it is obvious that disseminating the pure Dharma is impossible because they are based on erroneous grounds. The Buddha had assessed that such means could cause greater harms than benefits, thus unwilling to utilize spiritual power to spread the Dharma. He did not wish the monks employing spiritual power to attract people. In today’s environment, ordinary people still being attracted by spiritual power and miracle, basically it has little difference from the time when the Buddha was living. If one wishes to display spiritual power with the objective of spreading Buddhism, he would still miss the main point, and would loss the clarity of pure Buddhism; the disadvantage would out weigh the advantage after all.

4. The Teaching Commandment Supernatural Power is different from the Meditative Concentration Supernatural Power and Telepathy Supernatural Power. It is not exactly what ordinary people regarded as supernatural power. According to Buddha’s explanation, it is through teaching with skill and patience to guide methodically a person in studying Buddhism, and then arrive at cessation of vexation and realized liberation. It had nothing to do with supernatural power. However, if from the perspective of the enormous changes of an ordinary person, after having been guided to become a liberated sage, it could be regarded as the alternative supernatural power. Perhaps it is the reason why the Teaching Commandment being labeled as supernatural power.
